I was fortunate to have an opportunity to see and hear an inspirational musical performance Friday night.

Martin Sexton is touring the country, playing his music in small venues from the east coast to California. It is refreshing to hear an artist who can rightfully claim to have created a unique “world music” sound. In my opinion, Martin is the complete musician. Music pours out of him, powered by a ton of talent and a soul whose gifts include a style all his own. He has a fine, strong voice and has obviously paid his dues: his guitar work is honed to a fine point. Martin’s songs take us on a journey through a rich mixture of gospel and blues, country and rock, with a few tasty accents of jazz and African rhythms blended in.

His performance at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma, California included subtle nuances from an eclectic collection of singer/songwriters :Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Blind Faith, the Beatles, Van Morrison, and jazz singer Chet Baker, to mention a few. If you ever have an opportunity to see him perform live, it is an unforgettable experience.
