Lawmakers are considering a bill that would make the ukulele the state’s official musical instrument.
The bill passed through a house committee Wednesday with a unanimous vote. It now goes to the House floor for consideration.
The ukulele comes from Portugal, and was popularized by Hawaiian royalty, plantation workers, and musicians in the late 1800s.
Local talent like Jake Shimabukuro has helped elevate its popularity.
The bill states that recognizing the ukulele would honor music teachers and musicians throughout the state.
If made official, the ukulele will join 31 other representations of the state of Hawaii.
